I shared the following as a communion meditation this past Sunday. Hopefully you get gain something from it too.
I love Christmas time with the grandkids. My grandkids can’t wait for the time when I open the gifts they have bought for me. This year I got a 2,000 piece Mickey Mouse puzzle from Josie, a yard of Twix Candy Bars from Mason, 2 giant Candy Canes from Gavin. I want to show you what I got from Layla. (here you will have to use your imagination to see) Layla did her own shopping at her school. She got me a set of mini screwdrivers. She also got me a banner that says, “Welcome To Our Family – Family Is A Gift That God Gives You, Then Laughs.” I don’t know about your family, but that part about God laughing, I know from experience that must be true. I do know the Dawes family is not perfect.
I don’t know what Layla was thinking, what her reason was for buying this banner for me. I would love to be able to get inside the mind of young children and learn their reasoning for a lot of things. But I take it that Layla was telling me that she was glad that I am part of her family.
Family is a very important gift that God has given to us. I still can remember the day that Andy and Elaine came home from Toledo with Layla. (Layla is an adopted child) It was a cold day in February and Layla was 3 days old. There was snow on the ground and Andy’s driveway was covered with snow. I took my snow shovel and shoveled snow so they could get into the driveway and I didn’t even mind doing it. I was so excited to see this precious little bundle. I also can remember the day that Layla learned from one of her friends that she was adopted. It has been a couple of years ago. I don’t remember exactly what Layla said, but I think it was something like, “I don’t know what that means, but I am not adopted.” Layla cried when she learned about it. I also remember the day that one of her school friends told her she was black and she also said she wasn’t. I want to tell you that I am so happy to be part of Layla’s family and that she has welcomed me.
Each of us in Christ Jesus have been given a “Welcome To Our Family” banner. When we accepted God’s gift of Jesus as our Savior we were adopted into God’s family. And it wasn’t a matter of little consequence. Our being adopted into God’s family didn’t cost you and me anything, but it cost Jesus his life. It cost God the Father to give up His one and only Son to die for our sins. Now we remember the cost that was paid for us to be in God’s family. We remember Jesus and the way he died to save us as we share in this bread and this cup. God’s family isn’t perfect either but we are forgiven.
